Repost: Juanita Garciagodoy (March 10, 1952 – October 27, 2011)

In honor of the one year anniversary of Juanita’s death, I’m again sharing the memorial post I wrote for her. If you missed it last time, please take a look.

John,

I don’t think that I know you, but I did meeting Juanita a zillion years ago at an event when I was a student at (what was then) the College of St. Catherine. It was a fall in the early 1990s and Jonis Agee pulled together an event of writers and visual artists, all women, that she called Red Angels and Suitcases. Juanita and I ended up working on side-by-side pieces of a large drawing. I can’t tell you what we talked about because I don’t remember, but she was one of those people, for me, who you meet and never forget.

I didn’t realize that she’d died (I left the Twin Cities in 1995) but I am thankful that this is how I heard about her death.
